Rachael’s background
My name is Rachael Comer. I was working as a staff midwife in a Gynaecology ward in the West of Ireland. I loved working in Women’s Health. In particular I enjoyed educating women about their care, as well as being a preceptor to student nurses and midwives.
Theoretical knowledge and practical skills
This motivated me to pursue a Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing (Education) in the School of Nursing and Midwifery, National University of Ireland, Galway. I thoroughly enjoyed this programme. It provided me with the theoretical knowledge as well as practical skills to educate nurses and clients, using different teaching methods to improve engagement with learning.
At times I did find the course challenging. As a result, it made me think about education in a different way. In addition, it pushed me to try new and innovative ways of teaching. Overall though the experience was really great. Furthermore, having lecturers who are encouraging and motivating contributed to a wonderful learning experience.
I now feel more confident as an educator and the programme has also opened up further career opportunities for me.
