Course Description
Chinese
Teaching and research in Chinese Studies at Maynooth University is focused on culture, society, history and literature rather than on business and commerce. Research includes the role of sport in the making of modern China and modern Ireland, Chinese Cinema and national identity and how Western thinking reshaped traditional Chinese knowledge.
The MA in Chinese Studies aims to provide students who already have a background in Chinese language and culture at undergraduate level with an opportunity to specialise in the area of cultural and literary analysis with particular emphasis on the conflict and communication within the Sinosphere (mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau) and between China and the West.
Students will learn to read, interpret and translate a wide range of Chinese-language texts; build an understanding of the rapid cultural, economic, political and social transformation of China and the social, philosophical and ideological thoughts of Chinese social theories; and apply these theories to particular problems, issues and phenomena in Chinese society.
