- A doctoral degree (level 10 NFQ) in Mechanical/Aeronautical/Aerospace Engineering or related discipline.
OVERALL PURPOSE OF Post Doctoral Researcher in Composite Materials
Applicants are invited for the above post, starting September 1st 2020 or soon thereafter, which is funded by The European Space Agency (ESA). University of Limerick are seeking a talented scientist or engineer with in-depth knowledge of polymers, composites and related areas of science and technology including experience of the manufacture of pre-impregnated laminates (the material choice, manufacturing, process, thickness and lay-up shall be representative of flight hardware of spacecraft) and characterisation of the composite materials in relation to their use in industry, specifically using Non-destructive Investigations (NDI). The NDI techniques will include 3D X-Ray computed tomography, immersion ultrasound, laser shearography and conventional X-ray. Manufacturing defects will be assessed and characterised. Defects will include “kiss-bonds” to be manufactured in-house, with a bespoke manufacturing rig to be designed, fabricated, commissioned and subsequently adopted.
The successful applicant will be a member of a team and will have to interact closely with industry, partner universities, and the ESA. The successful candidate will be expected to collated reports, present at specified consortium meetings must therefore be free to travel within the EU. The successful applicant will plan, manage and carry out the manufacturing test plan and characterise samples using NDI techniques.
