Applications are being invited for a Post-Doctoral Researcher – Discipline of Children’s Studies at NUI Galway with the project “MedIcal Literature and Communication about Child health (1850-1914)” (MILC).

This position is funded by the IRC and is available for one year from 1 October 2022.

Post-Doctoral Researcher – Discipline of Children’s Studies at NUI Galway

The successful candidate will join the “MedIcal Literature and Communication about Child health (1850-1914)” (MILC) project based at NUI Galway. Their key-role within the team will be to build a body of data on French legislation about child health between 1850 and 1914. This will entail field work in relevant French archives to create catalogues of archival material and produce reports on the nature of the material. The successful candidate will also be expected to disseminate research results through conference presentations and articles in collaboration with the project PI.

The ideal candidate will have a background in health history, preferably with an emphasis on France.  The candidate will also be proficient in French and have experience in researching French archival material.

Duties:

  • Work alongside and report to the PI to develop a body of data on French legislation about child health (1850-1914)
  • Perform archival research in France
  • Produce catalogues of materials examined (incl. location for future consultation and hardware copies of the material, if any)
  • Contribute to dissemination of project results with co-authored article and co-presented paper

Qualifications/Skills required:

Essential Requirements:

  • PhD in health history
  • Research skills
  • Language: French and English
  • Archival research skills
  • Evidence of scientific publication and dissemination of results at conferences commensurate with career stage
  • Excellent verbal / written communication and organizational skills

Desirable Requirements:

  • Experience in French context C19th-20th
  • Experience in researching French archives
  • Experience working in team
  • Experience in researching historical legal documents

Salary: €39,523 per annum pro rata for shorter and/or part-time contracts (public sector pay policy rules pertaining to new entrants will apply)

Start date: Position is available from 1 October, 2022 – 30 September, 2023
