Applications are invited for a temporary post of a UCD Post-doctoral Research Fellow Level 1 within UCD school of Veterinary Medicine.
This project will investigate SARS-CoV-2, the coronavirus that causes COVID-19 disease, in sewage and sewage-contaminated waterways. Multiple studies have demonstrated that individuals infected with SARS-CoV-2 shed the virus in their stool. The trend in SARS-CoV-2 RNA in wastewater is correlated to the number of infections detected by clinical testing, showing that wastewater surveillance is an important and valuable tool to gauge the prevalence of the virus in the wider community. This project will focus on an all-island approach to perform wastewater surveillance for SARS-CoV-2 in Ireland, using an interdisciplinary team of scientists. The project will evaluate the behaviour and survival of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater and evaluate levels of SARS-CoV-2 RNA and viable virus in sewage. This will provide an invaluable tool to monitor the actual rate of infection in large communities served by a sewerage network to complement clinical SARS-CoV-2 screening.
This post is for an enthusiastic scientist with an interest in applied virology research. You will join an interdisciplinary team consisting of experts in virology, hydrology, epidemiology, modelling, civil engineering and molecular biology, and combine exciting research of high academic standard with the application of research findings in the field.
Fixed Salary: €42,201 per annum
