This PhD project will be based in the Radiation and Environmental Science Centre (RESC), Technological University Dublin which has research interests in the application of biophotonics (such as vibrational spectroscopy) to cancer diagnosis and prognosis.

The project will be supervised by Prof. Fiona Lyng and Dr Rubina Shaikh, Technological University Dublin, and co-supervised by Dr Cara Martin, Trinity College Dublin and Coombe Women and Infants University Hospital, Dublin.

The aim of this PhD project is to develop new tests to detect human papillomavirus (HPV) infections that can lead to cervical cancer. Early detection of these HPV infections can result in improved outcomes for patients because of earlier treatment. Vibrational spectroscopy will be used to profile the biochemical content of cervical cytology samples and advanced multivariate and machine learning methodologies will be used to develop a classification model for HPV detection using spectral, biological and clinical data.

The PhD student, in addition to their research, will attend training associated with the TU Dublin ARISE PhD programme. In addition, the PhD student will benefit from a 3 month placement with our industry partner, Screenlink Healthcare, Dublin, during the 2nd year of the ARISE PhD programme.
