On Friday 26 April, Assistant Professor in Law at Maynooth University, Dr. Yağmur Hortoğlu, gave a speech on The Federal Republic of Nigeria v P & ID Limited [2023] EWHC 2638 (Comm) and EWHC 3320 (Comm) at the Arbitration & Crime conference that took place in Sciences Po Paris.
Yağmur explained that cases like this are rare, but there is so much at stake that the risk should be taken seriously. She highlighted that in order to mitigate this risk, it all boils down to the detection of the fraud at the level of arbitration. In this regard, Yağmur noted that for the investigation of fraudulent use of arbitration, arbitrators need to be provided with more powers.
Dr. Yağmur Hortoğlu joined the School of Law and Criminology at Maynooth University in July 2021 as an Assistant Professor in Law. Her current research focuses primarily on arbitration law and private international law. She retains a keen interest in the interaction between Law and Psychology.
