The ICARUS Climate Research Centre has announced that a PhD Scholarship will be available for one student intending to commence PhD studies in September 2025.
The PhD project is part of an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) funded project from 2025-2029 looking at event attribution for the island of Ireland. The studentship will be concerned with the application of established event attribution techniques arising from the world weather attribution group retrospectively to selected historical Irish climatic extremes from the past decade.
The studentship will be expected to lead to a catalogue of retrospective analyses building a comprehensive understanding of how human-induced climate change has already altered the chances of recently experienced extremes.
The student will work with Prof. Peter Thorne, a senior PDRA (to be appointed), colleagues across ICARUS and with the WWA group in Imperial College London. Regular short duration fully-funded trips to London will be expected to ensure sustained collaboration.
The student will have the opportunity to contribute to broader aims including near real-time Irish and global analyses (the latter under WWA auspices),community engagement, and communications and outreach.
