127 postgraduate students from DCU Business School reached a significant milestone on Thursday, 1st of August as they presented their final practicum group projects to their clients. This achievement marks the culmination of a year-long engagement with a variety of organisations, where students applied their academic knowledge to solve real-world problems.

Over the course of the year, 25 groups of students were paired with diverse companies and not-for-profit organisations. These collaborations began in January when clients introduced the background of their live projects. The students embarked on a comprehensive process, which included:

  1. Determining the project brief and forming a detailed proposal in collaboration with their clients.
  2. Conducting extensive literature reviews, surveys, and interviews while liaising with professors, external experts, and commentators to support their evidence-based recommendations.
  3. Writing comprehensive reports that provide actionable insights and detailed implementation plans.
  4. Reflecting on their learnings and experiences to consolidate their knowledge.

This rigorous process allowed students ample time to implement, analyse, and optimise their activities. The unique opportunity to advise clients and critically analyse live data provided a hands-on experience that exceeds the traditional value of a dissertation.

Dublin City University (DCU) Business School continues to foster strong industry connections through its practicum projects, sourcing opportunities from a diverse array of sectors, including both business and not-for-profit organisations. This year’s participants include prominent companies such as ESB, LIDL, DAA, PwC, and SSE Airtricity providing students with invaluable real-world experience and the chance to apply their academic knowledge to practical challenges across various industries.

Professor Dominic Elliott, Executive Dean of DCU Business School, shared his thoughts on the event: “On behalf of the faculty, I would like to offer congratulations to all our postgraduate students presenting their practicum projects to their clients and peers on August 1st. The practicum project offers you a wealth of experience to take with you into industry!
